If Lady Winter has her way, the world will stay covered in blankets of snowy white and icy blue. Sister Spring will slumber forever and the winter will never end. Can Lady Winter really keep spring from coming or is there something the animals might do to help? Led by harbinger Robin, the animals are determined to wake Sister Spring, but what price will they each have to pay?

Through beautiful words and pictures, this enchanting tale about the battle of the seasons highlights one special bird who saves much more than just the day.

Children's Literature

When Robin saw Lady Winter place a magic cold, white blanket over Sister Spring so she would sleep forever and it would always be winter, the little bird calls the forest creatures and natural forces together to devise a plan to wake her. Lady Winter is ready for each creature as it tries to wake Sister Spring. Each of them fails in its endeavor but is changed in some way by Lady Winter. Finally, Robin visits the sun, struggles through the heat and pain of his burning belly feathers, and takes morning rays back to wake the sleeping Sister Spring. This original tale incorporates reasons why ladybugs have spots, skunks have stripes, sap runs in maple trees, and robins fly away for the winter. Ceccoli changes her pallet from cool blues to vibrant greens as the seasons change from winter to spring. Soft, delicate faces on people and animals invite the reader to peruse the pages. This is a fine way to introduce the change of seasons. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
