Ethnic Minority Media: An International Perspective
This is a really fascinating book for anyone interested in media literacy, First Nations issues, or science fiction. Adare does one of the best jobs I've seen making visible and clear the stereotypes around "Indians" in pop culture and why they're so harmful - even the ostensibly positive ones. The majority of the book looks at the results of surveying groups of First Nations people after watching various episodes of TV science fiction shows, including "Indian" episodes of Quantum Leap, The Adventures of Superman, My Favorite Martian, and Star Trek TOS, TNG and Voyager. Participants talk about their views on how First Nations culture and spirituality are portrayed, and often the frustration that goes with the misrecognition and misrepresentation.
