When Oliver gets a Mighty Pig cape for his birthday, he's thrilled. As soon as he puts it on, he imagines he has incredible superpowers. It takes his family a little longer to adjust, but soon Mother Pig has Oliver doing some rescue operations that look suspiciously similar to setting the table and emptying wastebaskets. Then one morning Oliver discovers his cape is missing!

All beginning readers who have ever wished they were superheroes will delight in the humorous antics of one very determined pig. With clever wit and simple vocabulary Jean Van Leeuwen has created another wonderful addition to her easy-to-read series, colorfully illustrated by Ann Schweninger.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

What a perfect present—Oliver gets a "Mighty Pig" cape. He suddenly feels like a real superhero. He can rescue people (his stuffed animals) from a major car wreck, a rocket ship on a collision course with the earth and can defeat the bad guys trying to take over the town. His imagination knows no bounds, but as much as he tries he just cannot get the knack of flying. All seems to be going well until he decides that he is much to busy to undertake the chores his mother has requested, but clever Mom—she does not get angry but finds a way to engage the superhero in the tasks. The only sad day that Oliver faces is when his wonderful cape has to be washed and dried. Then it seems like it will take forever and while he waits he feels like all of his superpowers have vanished. It is a happy moment, indeed, when he gets his cape back and is once again "Mighty Pig." A Dial "Easy-To-Read" Level 2 book which features short sentences and simple dialogue. 2004, Dial/Penguin, Ages 5 to 7.
