Up and away, off to the moon flies little Will’s red balloon. His big brother, Jake, volunteers to bring it home safely, but first he’ll need permission from NASA—and his parents—if he wants to join a space rescue mission. Being the youngest astronaut in history isn’t easy, though. The launch is bumpy, and outer space is very far from home. Jake will need to hold on tight if he’s ever going to reach the moon to save Will’s balloon. Big brothers and aspiring astronauts alike will love this story of a stray toy and one boy’s exciting journey to the moon.

Children's Literature

In this fantasy adventure, Jake's little brother loses his balloon when the wind sweeps it into the sky. Their dad tells them that it probably went to the moon. Jake, who is "six and three-quarters" years old, decides to retrieve the balloon by going to the Kennedy Space Center to take a trip to the moon. He asks for a ticket and finds out that he can leave on the next mission. His trip involves the blastoff, floating in air, and eating and sleeping in space. When they land on the moon, Jake steps out and soon finds the balloon. Then comes the splashdown and a ride in a helicopter. There's a happy ending when Jake is able to give the balloon to his little brother. Bold paintings add to the cheerful sense of fantasy and adventure. The detailed illustrations are educational and interesting. The descriptions of some of the necessary steps of a space flight provide basic information which is appropriate for young readers just learning about travel in space. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
