This volume is the proceedings of the William Harvey Research Conference held in London on the 12th and 13th June 1997. It covers the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, their release in pathological conditions, progress in the characterisation of leukotriene receptors, and the elucidation of signal transduction mechanisms following receptor activation. Particular attention has been directed at the use of the increasing number of available leukotriene receptor antagonists and biosynthesis inhibitors in diseases such as asthma and rhinitis.
These 15 review papers by 13 European and two North American contributors underscore the key role played by leukotrienes as mediators of allergy and inflammation. Particular attention is directed at progress in the understanding of LT synthesis, subtypes, release, and receptors (illustrated by diagrams), as well as the promising therapeutic applications of the increasing number of available leukotriene receptor antagonists and biosynthesis inhibitors in asthma and rhinitis. One paper discusses leukotrienes in cardiovascular disease. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
