This book of poems is all based on the famous pirate Blackbeard, two things caught my eye as I was glancing through books, first was the subject of pirates, and second was the illustrations. There is so much detail in these illustrations, some of the art in the book are actual photos, other are paintings, some are pastel. This is a very pretty book. The subject of pirates is a little bit different and could be used to attract those students that are not interested in poetry. I really enjoyed all the poems in this book, the one that sticks out is titled
"Blackbeard Gives a Lesson" One night he sat there drinking with his firt mate, Isreal Hands, and shot him in the knee, and said just so you understands, no man should take a notion, that a captains, palce is his, A running dog, you dog, should not forget just who he is.
This poem made me laugh, I suppose I liked how Blackbeard was showing his authority. At the end of the book is a timeline of Blackbeard's life which I found really intriguing. I think this would be a good book of poetry for older students.
