But the text was all too brief; a decent exposition on the early colonial-era school is not followed up in later periods, where anecdotes and stories related by interviewees takes the place of actual history. The lack of an index is also problematic, as the table of contents is vague -- it is impossible to easily go back and relocate a particular building or fact. Finally, despite the author's claim to have visited every on of the Lower 48 states, there are no photo entries for Rhode Island -- and hence possibly other state as well -- since there is no index to check whether other states are present or not. Despite these significant shortcomings, anyone looking for beautiful photos of some of the remaining one-room schoolhouses in America will find this book of use.
