This is a book about science & metaphors. It is a book about how a way to build a computer, a technology called neural networks, is changing the way we think about machines, computers, brains, & minds. It is notoriously difficult to tell what someone else is thinking. Yet century after century, we have tried to explain what goes on in our heads. We have imagined the mind as a nonmaterial thing, separate from the flesh of the body & the neurons of the brain. We have imagined the mind as a machine, perhaps a computer, that is identical to the physical brain, & we have imagined almost everything else in between.
