Primary Sources, Reconstruction Book

Written for high school students, this resource presents primary sources that vividly convey the issues of the time. Among those whose works are included are Frederick Douglass, Frances Butler Leigh, Andrew Johnson, and Hiram Revels. Government documents include the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, which outlawed slavery and granted citizenship, civil liberties, and the right to vote to former slaves. Each document is presented as part of a chapter, with several explanatory paragraphs of introduction and conclusion, lists of key points and additional information, and b&w plates of photos, and prints. A time line and glossary are included. This volume is part of a three-volume set, the Reconstruction Era Reference Library (though the three volumes are sold separately); the other two volumes contain biographies and an almanac.
