Introducing a brand-new volume of The Core Curriculum—a series of textbooks that are indispensable as both guides for radiology residents' rotations and study tools for written boards or recertification exams. Each volume of The Core Curriculum examines one key area—such as ultrasound, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, cardiopulmonary imaging, head-and-neck imaging, or interventional radiology—and focuses on the essential information readers need to do well on the boards. The user-friendly presentation includes chapter outlines...tables...bulleted lists...boxed text...margin notes...key review points...hundreds of illustrations...and an easy-to-follow layout.

Reviewer:Loren C. Macey, M.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description:This comprehensive book covers cardiopulmonary imaging, providing essential information at the level of a basic and upper level radiology resident.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a "core curriculum" level of essential information about thoracic radiology required for radiology residents during their rotations and written board examinations.
Audience:The book is designed to assist radiology residents and fellows with essential information about cardiopulmonary radiology, including x-ray exams, CT, MRI angiography, and ultrasound. It is also a good basic reference for radiologists who may not have current or subspecialty training in the advances occurring in thoracic radiology over the last decade, including high resolution CT and thoracic MRI exams.
Features:The book thoroughly covers the basics of thoracic imaging including normal chest anatomy and basic physiology; a discussion of the techniques involved with the various imaging modalities; and an extensive discussion of the chest radiograph. There is also a chapter on how to provide a useful and concise radiology report, an essential topic for new residents that is seldom included in such books. Early chapters cover the basic topics of immunocompetent and immunocompromised lung infections; lung cancer and masses; imaging the critically ill patient; lines and tubes; and trauma. Later chapters include airways, restrictive and obstructive diseases; pulmonary vascular and cardiovascular diseases; adult congenital heart disease and the pleura. The images and illustrations are very high quality. As with other books in this Core Curriculum Series, extensive chapter outlines, bulleted lists, tables, summary boxes, and points for review are abundant and helpful as learning tools. The authors are well known leaders in the field of thoracic radiology who write with a relaxed, easy-to-read, and sometimes humorous style. The book was very enjoyable to review; and it even gave me some helpful ideas for teaching thoracic radiology to our residents.
Assessment:This is a useful contribution to the subset of radiology books aimed at the radiology resident audience. It is easy to read, yet thoroughly covers the major topics of thoracic radiology.
