The strength of this book in the series "Stories from History" is that it is a graphic novel. Graphic novels are quickly emerging as a form of literature that students are choosing to read and finding enjoyable. Graphic novels allow students to be introduced to a multimodal approach to literacy. Readers learn from the text as well as from the accompanying graphics and pictures. Because some people are skeptical of this genre as a literary form to be used in language arts and content area classroom instruction, one has to ensure that the quality of this literary genre is of a high standard, and that the content is both accurate and easy to follow. It is on these grounds that this text is lacking. While the illustrations are colorful, engaging, and complement the text, the text itself is weak and at times confusing due to a lack of information or a need for clarification. For example, early in the book readers are introduced to several important figures in the life of Julius Caesar. Confusion sets in however when both Gaius Julius Caesar and Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus are described as being the first emperor of Rome. Other such clarifications need to be made with regards to when Julius Caesar became dictator of Rome. Such clarifications need to be made for this book to be suitable for younger readers, or to be useful for classroom instruction, or to be an appropriate introduction to the life of Julius Caesar.
