Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Helen Ewing, DHSc, MN(A. T. Still University)
Description:This timely book provides healthcare human resource managers with information and theory to better manage the diversity of healthcare workers in simple and complex healthcare organizations.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide theory, tools, and strategies for human resource leaders to be better equipped in their roles. This will allow the human resource department to provide the guidance and leadership required to ensure healthcare organizations are complying with legal requirements, human rights, and maintaining standards. By providing various case studies and resources to better manage the human resources of small to large healthcare focused organizations, the book meets its objectives.
Audience:It is written for healthcare human resource personnel and leaders at all stages and levels of management and may be helpful for all healthcare professionals who are involved in hiring and working with other employees.
Features:The book reviews a multitude of theory and practice around hiring, disciplining, ethical issues, union work environments, and documentation required by a human resource department in a detailed yet organized manner. Each chapter begins with an overview that clearly identifies the purpose and objectives. Terminology is well defined and case studies are effectively incorporated into each chapter with resolutions to solidify knowledge acquisition. Each chapter has an inclusive summary with discussion points to prompt critical thinking. Additional resources are supplied for more in-depth research if desired. A strength of the book is its review of the various federal laws that effect employer responsibilities. The layout, with big print, bolding, and appropriately situated exhibits, enhance readability. The book is well organized with the theory progressing with each chapter, yet chapters can stand alone and be read individually if desired.
Assessment:This is a well written book. The theory is introduced in a clear, organized manner with illustrative examples. With the shortage of healthcare professionals worldwide, it is more important than ever to have the tools and skills to effectively and efficiently manage human resources. This book will be an invaluable guide, particularly in organizations that may not have trained human resource staff.
