Who can resist? Any child who has ever wished for or had a new puppy will delight in this cozy portrait of puppy love.

What’s that puppy doing? Sleeping, playing, running — all the things every new puppy loves to do. Jane Cowen-Fletcher, the author-illustrator of BABY ANGELS and BABY ELF'S CHRISTMAS, introduces readers to one irresistible pup, her smitten young guardian, and a few very simple facts about puppy behavior. Bright pastel illustrations make this fetching picture book a treat to share with the youngest of children.

Children's Literature

What is a puppy? A little girl is about to find out—she has a brand new puppy, and there are many things that she does not understand about her pet. She soon discovers that her puppy needs lots of sleep, exercise, and food, not to mention a time and a place to "do his business" outside the house. The little girl realizes that after her puppy has what he needs, then he can play with her by running in the yard and licking her face. The main idea behind this book—that pets are not playthings, but living creatures with their own needs—is presented in clear language that even very young children will be able to understand. The text is sparse, large, and bold, and the repetition of phrases may encourage children to begin recognizing letters and words. The illustrations are done in muted pastels and are quite large, which is helpful for young children who are beginning to focus their eyes and see what is around them. Not to be confused in any way with the commercial hit "Hello, Kitty," this book is a good one to read to toddlers at bedtime. Reviewer: Leona Illig
