Life cycles are a source of great fascination for young readers, and I Wonder Why Caterpillars Eat So Much answers all sorts of questions, from familiar topics like the amazing life cycle of a butterfly and the story of frogs and tadpoles to more unusual life stories such as those of the lobster, the mosquito, and the angelfish. Illustrated with stunning, high-quality artwork, this book holds a wealth of information for inquisitive young biologists, and fun facts and lively cartoons enhance each topic.

Children's Literature

Fifty one questions and answers about life cycles of plants and animals organize the information in this colorfully illustrated book. The questions pertain to a number of issues, including the steps of a life cycle, different ways in which animals parent, and the functions of the varieties of eggs laid by various animals. A few less common questions, such as why spiders go ballooning and why pythons cuddle their eggs, appear alongside the more common questions about why glowworms glow and how tadpoles breathe. The answers to the questions are short, usually no more than three or four sentences, and most pages have one or two additional two-sentence paragraphs on topics related to the other information on the page. Colored drawings of all the answers to the questions supplement the text, and cartoon drawings of the shorter bits of information add humor to the book. The information in the text is clearly stated and usually easy to understand, though younger children would need help with some of the vocabulary in the answers. An index follows the text. The book is part of the "I Wonder Why" series.
