Heather Robertson - Children's Literature

Most children in one grade or another will be required to learn about rocks. Understanding types of rocks and how they are made and used is a common lesson in an earth science class, and fossils normally make it into a life science class as well. This book is a reference tool for just those lessons. As part of the "Kingfisher Young Knowledge" series, this is an overview of all of the topics listed above and more. Each spread covers a different topic and includes an overview paragraph in large print and two or three captions that discuss specifics on the topic. For example, one spread deals with metamorphic rock in general while the captions are about marble. Photographs fill each page, with vocabulary words printed at the bottom. The book ends with three projects for kids to try. These projects are actually possible to do at home. The book is not comprehensive, however, and leaves a few topics unexplained, but it would be valuable as a text to accompany a lesson. It would also be useful for middle school students who are reading below level as the text is not childish. 2003, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 8 to 11.
