This vivid pictorial history contains over two hundred carefully gathered images from the early 1800s to the present. Stories are revealed from the days when the "Old Oak" on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee was a prominent landmark in the changing landscape. We learn about the origin of Becky's Garden, the smallest island in the "big lake;" we shop at the cozy Meredith Center Store in the 1930s; and we visit early homesteads, grand inns, and bustling taverns.
Bruce D. Heald, PhD, is a local author who has written several books about the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Presently, Dr. Heald is an instructor of Humanities at Holy Trinity School in Laconia, and adjunct faculty member for New Hampshire Collage. His sources for this volume include the Meredith Historical Society, The Meredith News, The Weirs Times and Tourists Gazette, and private collections. The result of his work is a warm and informative glimpse of the past, sure to appeal to resident and historian alike.
