Peak District and the Heart of England
What a brilliant little book! Written in the early 20th century, the book is divided into 29 chapters with each being a mini-biography of celebrated British authors (poets/novelists/essayists) but with particular focus of how a certain area of the country (landscape, nature etc) influenced their writing.
I learned so much! Writers I didn't know anything about such authors as Meredith, John Aubrey, Richard Jefferies, Cowper & WH Hudson. I found each chapter best read with Wikipaedia on tap (so I could learn more about each author) and a copy of the Oxford anthology of Great English Poetry by my side, so I could read their poems.
Not all the authors were poets, and not all were English (Burns, Scott & Stevenson are included from Scotland) so there is something for everybody.
Highly recommended! As a result, I have ordered over 10 books from Abebooks for further reading on certain authors. I am incorrigible!
This review is based on my copy which is a 1928 edition published by Jonathan Cape. As with all my books, I do like them to feel good in the hands.
