Oggi non è più di moda parlare bene di Elias, sugli scudi per molti decenni nella seconda metà del secolo scorso. Dal punto di vista storiografico il libro è fragile appoggiandosi a conoscenze storiche un po' superficiali e a documentazione limitata e accreditata senza una vera valutazione critica. Conseguenze sono valutazioni, a volte discutibili, dei processi storiografici sottoposti a indagine, deduzioni un po' traballanti nella loro icasticità solo apparente.
Del resto lo stesso Elias ribadisce in molti luoghi della trattazione l'aspetto 'tentativo' della sua analisi.
Anche la lettura non è semplice e le numerose ripetizioni di concetti se da un lato aiutano a tenere il passo nello svolgimento della trattazione a volte la appesantiscono inutilmente.
Ma il volume resta sempre una lettura formidabile per la ricchezza dei temi proposti alla riflessione, per la novità (quando uscì) dell'approccio metodologico che offriva teorie e linguaggio della sociologia per la comprensione di complessi fenomeni del passato, per la forza e la coerenza dell'analisi.
