Every club needs a clubhouse, and Piper Reed isn’t going to give up until the Gypsy Club has one!

Children's Literature

Fifth-graders have a blend of capabilities in terms of their cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual development. There is often a mix of concrete thought with seemingly boundless imaginations into new territory, moving from the literal to more abstract explorations and understandings. Growing up in this pre-puberty stage is uncertain enough for boys and girls, but there is none of that sizzle in this story. Ten-year-old Piper Reed is a strong female who has amazing foresight as various circumstances converge by the end of the book. Leading up to a grand conclusion, for instance, is that she is not deterred by finding out on the first day of school that she has the very same teacher and classroom as last year. Quite unfortunately, her fifth grade room is still in the fourth grade hall. Also, she does not retreat when big sister, Tori, intimidates or taunts at the worst moments, nor does she flinch when doing the same towards her younger sister, Sam. Piper even takes dyslexia in stride. Due to a scheduling change from the previous year, thirty minutes was all it took for her to miss out on choosing the historical figure she wanted for a huge biography project. Researching Cyrus McCormick took much more digging in the school library than Amelia Earhart. Nonetheless, the over-riding concern on Piper's mind is locating clients for the Piper Reed Birthday Party Planners as a fund raiser for her friends' new clubhouse. The Gypsy Club members agree to buy one by pooling their resources. No matter that the cost of a house in a magazine ad is actually outrageous; they could still find a way according to Piper. Meanwhile, people and events bring obstacles that she meets head on in pursuitof the main goal. Perhaps being a Navy brat (like the author) strengthens character and generates an entrepreneurial spirit. On the other hand, Piper scrambles to complete the biography project just like other busy students, one of her best friends has colorful braces, gender roles among friends switch around so that a three-year-old's birthday party is delivered, and Piper ultimately recognizes she cannot be a successful leader by operating alone. Given her numerous responsibilities, there are indeed disappointments along with towing the line. Surprisingly, the expression "Get off the bus!" is happily exclaimed several times as Piper continues to persevere and be hopeful no matter what. The Gypsy Club is on the job with determined teamwork as her family gladly pitches in. This is a quick read, but is infused with meaningful themes which certainly highlight positive lessons and role models. More about Piper can be found in other delightful books by the same author.
