The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners
I once upon a time read Luanne Rice. And then stopped reading her books because it seemed the characters were starting to overlap themselves in my mind. And even though it's been years since I read Rice, it seemed like just yesterday, and the characters were once again typical of her novels. This book is all about the relationships between parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, and the choices they made in life. As a mother of a wonderful daughter I found myself often angry with Lyra and the selfish choices she made. I could relate to her feelings prior to abandoning her children, but couldn't reconcile her actions. There are some things you just don't do. One of those things is have children and then stop fighting for the right and ability to parent them. And then I found myself angry with the author for giving sixteen and fourteen year old girls wisdom far beyond their years. Seriously, there are not many girls that age who can think in the pattern that Rice seems to think they do and be able to express those thoughts in just such as way as Rice writes. I doubt I'll be reading Rice in the future.
