In his fourteen years, Vincent Drear has been sure of a few of things. First, the world is going to end. And until it does, he has two jobs: saving souls and protesting movies about boy wizards. But Vincent wonders if there's more to life than this. His suspicions are confirmed when he finds an elf at his school science fair. Vincent's excitement fades, though, as the elf informs him that his family's religion is right about one thing: the end of the world is coming-in forty-eight hours!
Vincent can't save the world. His only hope is to get his family off Earth before demons wipe out everything, paving the way for a new epoch.
Timothy Carter combines humor, fantasy, sci/fi, and satire into a novel that is the missing link between The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Left Behind.
The end has come. But the fun has just begun.
Fourteen-year-old Vincent Drear is tired of protesting movies about boy wizards; all the other religious sects gave up around movie number four. His parents, members of the fundamentalist Triumverates, are only too happy to keep up the fight. Poor Vincent is often locked in the family chapel by his parents for not being zealous enough, for not being more like his older brother Max. Home is embarrassing, and school is painful. As if that were not bad enough, suddenly he is seeing elves and pixies, and the elves have shoved a magical ladybug up his nose that makes him follow their orders on pain of-well, pain. One would think that it could not get any worse, but there is this whole end-of-the-world-in-two-days thing-and demons are everywhere waiting for the party to start. Vincent and his otherworldly friends must find the portal to the next world, knock out the magical shielding, and save the world, when all Vincent wanted to do was spend some time with his pretty former babysitter Chanteuse whose adoptive mother is actually . . . oh well, readers would never believe that. Carter's second young adult novel is an imaginative load of laughs. Vincent's crisis of faith and his forging of a new relationship with his older brother are nicely handled. Some of the supporting cast is a bit one dimensional, but this read is definitely worth a fantasy dollar. Just do NOT give it to fans of the Left Behind series as some of the publicity suggests; their parents will hunt you down.
