India and Pakistan
My father-in-law gave me this book as a gift in preparation for an upcoming trip to the country where he was born. He found a used copy on Amazon as he thinks it is out of print. He says he sought it out because it is his favorite book on Nepal.
It was published in 1993 so some of the information may be out of date. I would not rely on it by itself for a guide book to use on a trip, but I would highly recommend it as a rich complement to an up-to-date guide book such a Lonely Planet.
Its strengths are the narrative sections on history, ethnic and cultural groups, festivals and holidays, and religion, the photos, the sidebars on various topics such as the Khampas guerilla resistance movement or the life of the Buddha, and the walkthroughs of things to see in various regions.
A weakness would be the maps. Many of the sites described in the book do not appear on the maps - something I found frustrating but easily fixed with the help of Google Earth.
