Polar Animals: Seals Book

This nonfiction book is intended for children ages three to eight. This book connects facts about cats to different breeds of cats. It details many typical traits of cats (such as: Cats are made of energy, cats are made of brains, cats are made of legends, etc.), and explains how cats are energetic, or smart, or tells a legend about a cat. The book is very bright and colorful, with each page a different color. There are fun illustrations on every page, generally of the cat being discussed on that particular page. I do think that the book could benefit from the inclusion of actual pictures of the different breeds of cat, rather than just the illustrations which are often more comical than realistic. The last page is devoted to a list of superstitions about cats, including that every cat has nine lives and that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck. Every other page in the book has a "Feline Fact" on it to go with the fun information about cats. These facts include things like that cats can't taste sugary foods and that it has been scientifically proven that petting a cat lowers blood pressure. I would actually have preferred more of these facts in the book than some of the other things that were included. The theme where every page has "Cats are made of" also broke down a bit towards the middle, as it looked like the author was running out of things to say that cats were made of. It was a fun book to read, and I learned some things, but I wasn't overly impressed with it.
