Describes different kinds of roller coasters, their history and how they opperate and gives examples of each type.
Both wooden and steel roller coasters are featured in this book that holds appeal for hi/lo readers of upper elementary/middle/or high school. The table of contents delineates six chapters and text boxes listed on this page show the book's "features." Burgan uses lots of clear color photographs and even thought the text is a little short on content and depth, it does include the newer coasters. While he attempts to cover coasters around the world, most coasters featured are from the Paramount amusement parks. This may not be the book for the coaster enthusiast. Included are a glossary, bibliography, addresses of coaster groups, web sites and index. Part of the "Built for Speed" series 2001, Capstone Press, $21.26. Ages 9 up. Reviewer: Mary Sue Preissner
