Carver awakes in an unfamiliar Moscow hotel room with no recollection of how she got there and only nightmarish wisps of memories from the previous five days. After making a hasty return to London, Jay relearns that her uncle, Duncan Bailey, has disappeared. With help from friends, like undercover cop Tom Sutton and MI5’s Max Blake, Jay uncovers surprising secrets in Bailey’s past, including sinister ties to Russian oligarch Nikolai Koslov, now resident in Britain. An uninspired romantic quandary—should she try to salvage a relationship with Tom or give in to Max’s importuning?—adds little to the story. In the end, Jay must risk returning to the scene of her nightmares to find her missing uncle. Climactic scenes in both Russia and Britain test Jay’s mettle and prove she’s up for further adventures. The opening of this book is heart in your mouth stuff. Captain Jay MCCauley awakes in a hotel room - she feels dreadful and staggering to the window opens the curtains and realises she is in Moscow, except that she cannot remember how she got there. When she contacts the hotel desk she discovers that she has lost five days of her life.
Her memory is patchy, but she pieces together that she has been kidnapped and drugged,, and the last true memory is has is that she was looking for her Aunt Elizabeth's husband Duncan., who had just disappeared. I said that the opening of this book is heart in your mouth stuff, well the tension never lets up. When Jay returns to the UK she starts again looking for Duncan and discovers things about happy family man Duncan that lie uneasily with her. Soon she is embroiled in lies, deceit, and a powerful Russian oligarch. Her investigations lead her to Siberia and back to injustices perpetrated many years ago.
On a personal front DI Tom Sutton is still around, but their relationship has moved out rather than in, and Jay is still unsure if she wants it to move back to where they were. Meanwhile the enigmatic Max Blake re-appears. Personally I would grab Max and ditch Tom in a heart beat, but shesh! what do I know, all my relationships have been a disaster, best not take relationship advise from me Jay.
This is high adventure, a real thriller. I sat up until 3.30am to finish it no way could I go to sleep before I knew the outcome. Very highly recommended.
