Anyone who can't get enough of Shakespeare's histories (only 10 of them, after all, one of which is an effing embarrassment) or who loves Richard II in particular (as I do) needs to read Thomas of Woodstock, by that great playwright Anon. Not without its problems, certainly, but this accomplished and entertaining piece sets up the action, the themes, and (imperfectly) the character motivations of The Tragedy of King Richard II in ways that Shakespeare was deliberately aware and making use of. Sure, the titular uncle to King Richard (with all his defenders) reminds us thrice per page that he is 'Plain Thomas', wont to 'speak the truth' or 'speak his mind''a lesion the play persists in worrying and picking at until it itches and weeps so intolerably that one is tempted to side with Richard and the conspirators who execute Thomas on his behalf. (Surely it was understood even in the 16th century that persons who remind you constantly that they are honest, are not.)
