Profiles the native and immigrant groups that have peopled North America, focusing on the modes and monitoring of immigration.

Library Journal

Gr 6-10-This encyclopedia presents the origins, lifestyles, and culture of the various ethnic groups that populate the U.S., Canada, and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. Articles are organized alphabetically and cover both the ethnic groups and "immigration related and cross-cultural subjects." These include such topics as personal names, music, literature, industry, and employment. The unsigned articles vary in length and scope and are somewhat uneven. Certain entries, for example, feature maps that show both the areas in North America that the group has settled as well as the location of their country of origin. Other entries only include a North American population distribution map. Similarly, the scope of the information presented varies from article to article, although every effort is made to provide consistent information on the major immigration/emigration themes. In general, the writing is clear and neutral in tone. The appealing layout features numerous maps and color photographs. Multitoned insets offer statistics and additional, often fascinating, information. Each entry also lists suggested Web sites. The same glossary, index, time line, and list of suggestions for further reading are repeated in each volume. Despite some minor shortcomings, this will be a highly useful reference tool for students studying immigration.-Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
