Blood on the Snow: The Carpathian Winter War of 1915 Book

Although this is a monograph that I've been meaning to read for years, the reality is that it has major flaws, particularly in the opening chapters that set the scene, in that the writing is so clunky and repetitive one has to wonder why it was allowed to go to press. This is all the more confusing in that I don't recall such problems with Tunstall's study of the siege of Przemysl. Be that as it may, the chapters dealing with the three successive Austrian offensives designed to relieve the fortress do have value, are better written, and they do a good job of documenting the misery and horror of a winter war in the Carpathian mountains. Still, this is only a book for the hardcore specialist and, hopefully, someone writes a better study on the topic at some point in time; I know that I was skimming the first fifty or so pages, in lieu of throwing the book at the wall.
