Little Red's Summer Adventure
Grade/interest level: Upper elementary (4th-5th grade)
Reading level: No lexile given but around 4th grade level with vocabulary support and key background knowledge

Main Characters: Papa, Ruthie
Setting: Georgia countryside is the setting for the flashbacks to the soldier's youth and Bastogne, Belgium during World War II.
POV: from Ruthie
The book begins with showing the enlistment of an American boy into the U.S. army. The story of what is happening in WWII is told side by side with flashbacks to the boys childhood and shows how his experiences in his childhood have helped shape him as a soldier. For example in one part of the story when they were being dropped over Belgium and the soldiers had to jump out with their parachutes, there is a flashback showing the boy jumping and swinging on a rope over an angry pig. His courage and bravery continue as he takes the leap from the plane. The man gets separated from his company and he has to find a hiding place for the night and he goes into a barn which he finds is filled with soldiers from all sides. In the morning he makes it out and as he is running, gets shot in the leg. He makes it to his company and he is taken away to a hospital and is then sent home to recover. He is greeted as an American hero and Ruthie, his daughter is glad to have him back. Throughout the story, Papa sends Ruthie letters while he is at war.
I would use this book in the classroom when discussing various World War II battles. Because the book gives a soldier's perspective as well as the perspective of those he left behind at home, I think it is a great way to see the impact of war on families as well as on individual soldiers from enlistment to coming home.
