FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A series about an only child and his huge best friend, a mastiff named Mudge.

Sara Lorimer - Children's Literature

Henry, his parents, and his big dog Mudge take a road trip to "the West," an area rich in cowboys, mesas, and cactuses, in the 27th book of their adventures. Mudge and Henry enjoy chasing after tumbleweeds and gathering them into a pile, while Henry's mother wishes Mudge "could clean the house as fast as he can clean the West." Children who are already to the west of "the West" might need to be oriented--just where they take this vacation is never stated. Each page is fully illustrated in the style of Sucie Stevenson, is in color, and has two or three short sentences of text ideal for early readers who are ready for occasional new words like "bandannas" or "souvenir." It is not the most interesting of books but would be good preparation for a family trip to, say, New Mexico, or a long road trip (Henry and Mudge both behave very well in the car). 2005, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Ages 3 to 7.
