FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Hank the Cowdog is head of Ranch Security in this action-packed adventure series that will tickle funny bones of adults and children alike.

Children's Literature

The ranch is in danger: Somebody has been stealing tools from the surrounding ranches. Hearing this, Loper Ranch s self-appointed head of security, Hank the Cowdog, is prepared and waiting for some action. He rules the roost when it comes to the other animals on the ranch. His deputy, a sly and lazy dog named Drover, cracks jokes and does not take his job all that seriously. Hank s owner, the ranch owner, decides to take a weekend vacation. This leaves ranch hand Slim with the awful task of staking the hay bales for the whole day. Later that evening, Hank hears a noise. Could this be the tool thief? This is #48 in the Hank the Cowdog series, and Erickson expects the reader to know some of the characters and the settings that are involved in this book. Hank the Cowdog talks directly to readers, which really involves them in the book. The book s humor captures the emotions of particular scenes. The rough-looking drawings seem as if they were designed to fit with rural ranch life. The illustrator also portrays the dogs faces as one might imagine them. Reviewer: Chris Hoover
