Meditiations on the Cross Book

This book had been sitting in my to-read pile for a long time, but the very unusual covid-impacted Eastertide seemed the appropriate time to read it.

It's a small book, and yet not a quick read for it's size. Bonhoeffer was a German theologian, and it shows. Much like the Apostle Paul, his writings require some reflection to fully grasp. It is notable that both men wrote complex thoughts in another language'Paul in Koiné Greek, Bonhoeffer in German. It does not demean the translators to say that the English likely does not fully capture the nuance of the original; it is simply the reality of translation. And yet, there's still a lot of that nuance and depth still visible, as Bonhoeffer dwells on the incarnation, the crucifixion, and the resurrection in all their meaning.

Also, much like the Apostle, Bonhoeffer became a martyr for the faith, standing against the evils of the Nazis and their influence on much of the established churches in Germany. Here was a man who believed what he was writing.
