The Pat Metheny Songbook is written in a lead-sheet/fake-book style similar to the "real" books that jazz musicians use on gigs. The presentation of the songs have the melodies with the chord symbols written above the music staff. Specific rhythms and/or instructions are also given as examples where it is needed in the songs. The songs are in chronological order instead of alphabetical order - this takes a little time to get used to, but makes complete sense in order to show Pat Metheny's development as a composer.
The harmony for each song is very accurate due to the songwriters (mostly Pat Metheny with Lyle Mays as collaborator on some songs) directly being involved with putting together this book. The book also has a great introduction with a detailed biography of Pat Metheny with timeline chart & illustrated discography. There is an appendix with detailed information about each song, followed by quotations of Pat Metheny (called meditations in the book), and an acknowledgments page at the end of the book.
This is a very complete package as compared to many other songbooks/fake-books that I have seen or that I own. I highly recommend the Pat Metheny Songbook to any serious student of modern contemporary music and/or fan of Pat Metheny. It would also make a great addition to have for anyone who collects songbooks or music memorabilia. It's a good one!
