A chilling supernatural tale!

Just before summer begins, thirteen-year-old Ali finds an old photograph. She recognizes the two children. One’s her mother, the other her aunt Dulcie…but who is the third person, the one who’s been torn out of the picture? Ali will have all summer to figure it out, since she’s spending the summer with her aunt and her cousin in the same house her mom and aunt used to visit when they were kids.

Then Ali meets Sissy. Sissy is mean, spiteful, and determined to ruin Ali’s summer. Sissy also has a secret. Could it have something to do with the old photo? Ali is dying to find out, and if she’s not careful, that’s exactly what might happen to her.

KLIATT

In her typical fashion (shivery but not gory), Hahn tells about 13-year-old Ali, who is babysitting for her aunt at their family's summer cottage by a lake in Maine. She and her niece befriend Sissy, who is not the nicest girl and who has some strange habits. Eventually Ali pieces together the clues: a photograph of her aunt and mother as children with another girl who looks remarkably like Sissy, a scribbled-out crayon name on an old game board, talk from the locals. She confronts her aunt to find out the truth about what happened on a canoe ride years ago. Ali and her niece also go on a canoe ride with Sissy, but are rescued. And Ali determines to put Sissy to rest by revealing where her bones are so she can be buried and move on. The foreshadowing is a bit heavy-handed, and most readers will realize who Sissy is long before it is revealed. Ali's changing feelings for the little girl over time help personalize the ghost. Ali realizes just how unfortunate the ghost has been not to be able to grow older and mature like a normal child. The cover is wonderfully evocative, with Sissy's pale face seeming to swim just under the water with her hair spread out around her. This provides just the right amount of shiver for this age group without scarring them for life. Reviewer: Sherry Hoy
