FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. These early chapter books feature third-grader Marvin Redpost and his humorous misadventures with friends and classmates.

Children's Literature

Marvin is intrigued by his classmate, Casey Happleton. Although he would never admit to his buddies that he likes Casey, he begins spending after school time with her. Part of the attraction is her four-story house, which was once a fire station. On their first play date, Casey shows Marvin her magic crystal, which gained magic powers after being struck by lightning. Casey soon has Marvin convinced that their wishes on the rock/crystal will come true. Marvin never altogether loses his skepticism, but readers can see that he really, really wants to believe. Marvin embodies the typical elementary school kid growing into his own¾not quite a little boy, but still a long way from adolescence. His struggles with peer pressure, girls and schoolwork all ring true. Kids can easily identify with Marvin. The entertaining text is filled with subtle humor and is easy to read. This title, which has nine chapters, is number eight in the author's "Marvin Redpost" series. 2000, Random House, . Ages 6 to 9. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
