Jack is quiet—which wouldn’t be so bad if the rest of his family wasn’t SO NOISY. No one can hear him over the sound of their own voices. So when Jack tells them he's going up the mountain one day, nobody hears him. And when night falls, nobody knows where he is. Now Jack will have to find his voice in order to help his family find him. This satisfying story is set against a rural western backdrop and features Jessica Meserve’s vivid illustrations, which burst with color and personality.

Children's Literature

Poor quiet Jack. His whole family is "VERY NOISY." No one seems to hear what he says. Each person he tells that he is going "to the very top of the mountain today" simply answers as if he said something else. He just hopes somebody heard him as he sets out with his stuffed animal friend Chester "up, up, up the mountainside " When he reaches the top, he shouts, "Can anybody hear me?" His voice seems to disappear. He and Chester play, then find a lost wolf cub. Together they howl until the wolf mother arrives. When they encounter a bear, Chester encourages Jack to growl until the bear flees. When night falls, however, Jack fears they are lost. He manages to call loud enough for his searching parents to find him. Back home, he demands quiet so they all will finally listen to "every word" of his story. The jolly barnyard animals on the end pages set a lighthearted tone to the visual story, one encouraging to youngsters who feel that no one is ever listening. Digitally produced scenes depict Jack in mundane activities at first. Then some double pages describe the hilly landscape and cloudy mountaintop. Jack is an appealing kid in a ten-gallon hat ; little Chester makes a believable companion. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
