The Walkers are moving to a new town, and staying with an aunt who's allergic to dogs. Too bad for Andi and her brother Bruce, who love dogs -- and happen to meet a stray that needs help. Soon, Andi hatches a plan, turning the abandoned house down the block into a hotel for dogs. But as more and more tenants move in, the secret gets too big to keep. Can the kids save their canine castle? Or will the hotel have to close?

Children's Literature

Andi's father has taken a temporary assignment in a city a long way from where Andi's family lives but because her father's aunt lives in the new city and has offered to let them stay with her until his assignment is finished, the family is able to go too. The only problem is that Aunt Alice is allergic to dogs and they have had to leave their family dog with a friend at home until they move back. When a lovable stray shows up at Aunt Alice's door, Andi enlists the aid of her brother to find a place to hide the dog and take care of it until they can find a home. The place they find is an abandoned house down the street from Aunt Alice's house. The trouble starts when the stray dog has puppies. Suddenly the kids are running a dog hotel, and they have no way to buy food or keep the neighbors from suspecting. Other challenges include a bullying neighbor and a nosy real estate agent and other needy dogs appear. Young readers will love Andi and her hotel guests and will be on the edge of their seats to find out what happens. The conflicts are real and the solution is believable in this recommended reprint of an old favorite. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
