Parker hadn't considered getting a dog, but when playful Merlin, the golden retriever, comes into his life, Parker is thrilled. The two are inseparable from day one--because whenever Parker tries to leave, Merlin escapes his fence or cage and follows him! Can anything make this loveable dog sit and STAY?

Children's Literature

Parker Green's new dog Merlin seems to be the best dog in the world. The adorable golden retriever likes to go for walks and play fetch, and he always has a goofy smile on his face. But Merlin loves Parker so much that he never wants to be away. The Greens quickly discover that Merlin has a knack for getting out—and getting into trouble. He jumps fences, opens doors and unlocks bolts; he will do whatever it takes to find Parker. If Parker wants to keep his new dog, then it is up to him to find a way to keep Merlin from getting them both into trouble. Parker's narration accurately captures the essence of an 11-year-old-boy, both in dialogue and in observations. The protagonist gripes about his dad's new girlfriend, would rather play baseball than be in school, and is beginning to understand the complexity of teenage girls. Why would a boy need a girlfriend when he could spend time with his dog instead? The friendship that Parker and Merlin form symbolizes the notion that a dog really can be man's best friend. Sutherland depicts the character of a dog that everyone knows: loveable, friendly, and exasperating! Readers will feel the tension as Merlin continually gets Parker in trouble, but we are all thankful when the problem is solved and Merlin will be staying put—for good. This "Pet Trouble" book will be helpful for kids learning the responsibilities of having a pet, while still having fun! Reviewer: Jillian Hurst
