R. L. Stine's tale (Scholastic, pap. 2008) opens with Billy and his sister Sheena spending time with their uncle on his hi-tech research boat where they discover that they are near the wreckage of a long-lost pirate ship. The three wedge themselves into their uncle's deep-sea submarine to search for the ruins. No sooner do they discover the ship than things start to go horribly awry. Narrated by Jeff Woodman, continuous eerie background music and simple, but copious sound effects give the production the feel of an old-time radio play. Distractingly loud mood music interferes with the narration of the opening sequence, but then quiets down. The undead skeletons' chant is unnerving and spine-chilling, and a suggested beheading (only in a character's imagination) seems excessively violent. Billy and Sheena decide to spend the summer with their uncle Dr. D. He has a lot planned for them. The most exciting activity is finding a pirate ship that has been lost ever since it sinked. Billy and Sheena are very excited, but who would have guessed that their little adventure would take a bad turn. First thing gone bad, their uncle disappears. Then they are stranded on a weird island where skeletons are alive. And they are after them.
This was really fun to read. I love pirates and hidden treasures and everything creepy that R.L. Stine creates. This book had everything. The first story was a fast little tale of the two sibligns searching for their uncle and ending up findind a whole lot of trouble.
After Creep in the Deep is over we are back at Horrorland. Exactly where we left of. I didn't know how the Horrorland scene would play out, but Stine wrote the little stories at the end of each book as one big Horrorland story. Billy and Sheena go to Horrorland and there they find Britney and Molly, from the first book, exactly were we left them. I loved that we continued on with this story. A lot of things happened and we even met the main character of the next book. This story is the reason I am so excited. I can't wait to read more.
