If Rossi had been a bit more lucid writer with a more systematic and coherent approach to his presentation, he would've created a veritable masterpiece of historical summary. As it stands, the book still provides a staggering amount of information for many, and, at its best, it beautifully elucidates the hidden structures of thought and ideology seen to dominate back in the late Middle Ages/Renaissance/Baroque times. Throughout the work, Rossi's preoccupation with embedding the matters in their proper context and debunking myths about the precursors of modern scientific method burns solar-bright, and the sheer mass of names and topics here is enough to demonstrate his expertise. With the help of better editors (who could've pointed out to him where he takes too much for granted, where he fails to explain a term timely or where he topic-hops too briskly), this would've been a real Renaissance work indeed!
