Orientalism and Islam: European Thinkers on Oriental Despotism in the Middle East and India
This would be a four-star sourcebook and primer on Orientalism if the author understood the concept as originated in Edward Said's eponymous book. Instead he is apparently responding to academics who have misconstrued the term. The result is a panoramic survey of major Orientalist thinkers and their contributions to the Western ideas of the East and Islam, but bookended by these strange discourses to the effect that because the writers' observations and theories were intelligent, subtle, and nuanced, and were not intentionally seeking or buttressing Western empires, that they therefore were not exhibiting Orientalism.
