The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Humanism
As a collection of articles by different authors, I find it hard to give this volume an overall rating. Some articles are quite informative, and some left my eyes glazing over as I skipped to the next one.
They are arranged somewhat chronologically, starting from the beginnings of humanism with Petrarch, and proceeding to the trailing off of humanism in the enlightenment. The fact that the articles are written independently causes there to be unnecessary repetition, as some of the early authors feel the need to start over again at the beginning.
The weakest articles I felt were at the end, when humanism was influencing the rise of vernacular literature by its opposition to it. I especially found the last two on early modern English vernacular literature to have little to do with humanism. But that's more subjective, because early modern English vernacular literature appeals to me so little.
I've read better and worse Cambridge Companions.
