Discusses historical events surrounding the Battle of the Alamo, including the roles played by Mexican General Santa Anna and Americans Stephen Austin, Jim Bowie, Davy ...
"Remember the Alamo" became the rallying cry for vengeance after Santa Anna's Mexican forces killed all of nearly 200 men who bravely fought to defend the tiny mission in Texas. The territory, part of the Mexican Republic, captured the imagination of many people who eagerly flocked there. At first, the Mexican government allowed immigration, but they soon were worried about the arrival of thousands of Americans. Immigration was banned in 1830 and soon the power-hungry Santa Anna seized the reins of authority. The Americans were fearful that there would be no freedom under the Mexican dictator so they prepared for revolution. Many frontiersmen such as Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis, joined the doomed battle. Later, Santa Anna was defeated and Sam Houston was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas. Excellent photographs and illustrations accompany the detailed source. As part of the "Cornerstones of Freedom, Second Series," this would be an ideal source for a history curriculum. Bibliographic information, an index, glossary, and timeline are included. 2003, Childrens Press,
