Discusses the abolitionist movement in the United States, from the time of the slave ships to the end of the Civil War.

Norah Piehl - Children's Literature

Heavily illustrated with archival photographs, advertisements, and primary source documents, this straightforward history of the abolitionist movement effectively balances factual information with anecdotes. Its more or less chronological organization begins with a brief history of slavery in the United States and ends with the Emancipation Proclamation. Along the way, it provides brief profiles of abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison and Sojourner Truth. Sidebars include supplementary information as well as direct quotations from several important figures. A broader historical context (such as the relationship of the abolitionist movement to other social movements that followed it) would have been helpful, but the book stands as a useful starting point for further reading. Aids to young researchers include a glossary, an illustrated timeline, and a brief index. The brief biography includes both books and websites. This book is part of the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series. 2004, Children's Press/Scholastic, Ages 7 to 10.
