An introduction to the life of the African American scientist who overcame great hardship to make unusual and important discoveries in the field of agriculture.
Scientist and botanist George Washington Carver is brought to life in this short informative, easy-to-read "Rookie Biography." Young readers learn how he found over 300 uses for the common peanut and encouraged better use of soil by crop rotation. Archival black and white photographs are accompanied by a few in color and most are modestly captioned. An unfortunate choice of some unidentified green plants, rather than using a peanut plant growing, misses the chance to let readers see in color a plant important to Carver, although harvested peanuts are shown. "Words You Know" comprises a picture glossary which reminds readers of some of the highlights of Carver's life, as well. An index is included. 2004, Scholastic/Children's Press, Ages 4 to 8.
