Explains the history, importance, and celebration of Canada Day.
The "Rookie Reader series includes more than two dozen "Rookie Read-About Holiday" books. The text opens with a picture of a young girl waving the Canadian flag. Canada Day is July 1st and is the equivalent of July 4th in the United States. It celebrates the day that Canada became an independent country. The text shows a map of Canada and it explains that the country consist of ten provinces and three territories. A brief history of how it all came about, including the selection of the maple leaf as the national symbol on the Canadian flag, plus the way the holiday is celebrated constitute the balance of the book. Full-color illustrations are found on each spread. There is a picture glossary entitled "Words You Know," an index and a very brief mention of the author. 2003, Children's Press/Scholastic,
