I enjoyed the book somewhat, but it walks the line between common reader and scholar. The author is very approachable, and the book is well organized, and the idea of doing an aesthetics reading in Homer is a great idea; however, this is not a ground-breaking book. Its analysis is inconsistent, and at times self-contradictory; because sometimes the author doesn't deal with issues like the "Author Problem" for Homer, and so he leaves out important avenues for interpretation. If you want a cursory analysis of a few characters and themes, this may be what you're looking for, but the Cambridge companion offers a better introduction to the discipline.
