ON THE SINISTER ISLAND where strict obedience to the laws of the mysterious Dr. Sigmundus holds sway, dreaming will get you locked up and branded a lunatic, a danger to society and to all who know you. In this doomed and repressive place, two teens that were never meant to meet or share their dreams, cross paths and set in motion that which rips them from the lives they were meant to lead. Together they join forces with a ragtag group of rebel forces bent on breaking the grip of lies and illusions their countrymen have accepted without question.
For fans of thoughtful science fiction and fantasy, The Hollow People opens a window on the unseen worlds that surround us. It is the first installment in The Promises of Dr. Sigmundus. Book II will continue the tale in fall 2008.
This first novel in "The Promises of Dr. Sigmundus" trilogy introduces readers to kitchen servant Dante Cazabon. Trapped on Tarnagar island, the site of an asylum, Dante follows orders and endures derisive taunts because his mother had been an inmate there. His superiors assign Dante the nastiest chores, including delivering food to Ezekiel Semiramis, a dangerous killer incarcerated in the asylum's prison. While Dante toils, Beatrice Argenti, the entitled daughter of physicians, questions why she must memorize Dr. Sigmundus' dictates and participate in her community's coming-of-age ceremony during which she will be forced to take Ichor to repress her dreams and imagination. Bea sketches in a wooded hideaway where she encounters Dante who sees her drawing of a mysterious city which resembles a place in his dreams. Using the Odylic Force, Semiramis aids Dante and Bea to escape Tarnagar with him and travel to Moiteera, the city Bea and Dante envisioned, where people conduct anti-Dr. Sigmundus activities. Semiramis reveals truths to Dante regarding his parents' identities and Dr. Sigmundus. Soon, Dante and Bea are thrust into warfare against pro-Sigmundus forces. Hinting of Dante's future empowerment to fulfill his destiny, this novel successfully establishes the premise for later volumes. For more protagonists defying futuristic mandates, pair with Pete Hautman's Rash (2006) or Kathryn Lasky's Star Split (1999). Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer
