This sequel to Tunnels (Chicken House/ Scholastic, 2008/VOYA October 2008) begins with Will's biological mother, an escaped Colonist, evading the merciless Styx above ground, while Will, Chester, and Will's brother Cal are on the Miners' Train, headed into the Deeps, a place of dread for the people of the underground Colony. Chester, Will's friend from Topside, was tortured and then banished to the Deeps. Will, accompanied by Cal, has gone to save him and to look for Will's adoptive father, an archaeologist who is happily exploring the Deeps. He does not know that his daughter Rebecca is a changeling, a member of the Styx assigned to watch Will while he was growing up. Rebecca also leads the search for Will's mother, who after twelve years of freedom, is finally captured and, mislead to believe that Will is evil, that he (instead of the Styx) killed her brother, has kidnapped Cal, and must be destroyed. Soon Will's mother also is in the Deeps, armed and dangerous and after her son. Fortunately Will and company have met Drake, a Topsider brought below by the Styx for his engineering skills, who escaped and now battles against them, and Elliott, a teenage girl trained to be as deadly as he is, especially with explosives. Their mission is to survive and to stop the biological plague the Styx plan to spread topside. The cliffhanger ending leaves readers anxiously awaiting book three, Freefall. Being Deep Underground for 645 pages isn't a healthy read..
Dark & hot as it is, even with the fascinating imagination of the atmosphere, underground river the creatures, even the lost civilisation theories of the Deeps.
It's just too long, claustrophobic even.. not much happening here to be that long.. it can be a better novel in less than half of the pages.*** The Story ***
Will and his brother Cal successful rescued his best friend, Chester from the Deeps.
And they continue searching for his adoptive father who somewhere in the Deeps making researchers about the curious civilisation of the underground world.
They met two rebels Darek and Elliot who tell them how the Styxs are mass killing the Deep's residents for unknowing reasons. Beside , of course, hunting and killing the rebels.
Meanwhile, Will and Cal's real mother, Sarah, who runaway from the Colony years ago is returning to avenge her brother's death who the Styx tricked her into believing her son Will who killed him and abducted his younger brother along the way.
The Styx also planning to release a plague to get rid of all the Topsoiler population and regain control their promised Earth..
After many supposed deaths all the characters goes even Deeper..Deeper into the center of Earth.
Except one , Darek who return to the topsoil, watching the styx who watching the adoptive mother who still immersed in soap opera.
That's really summing up All the characters movements and events in the whole 645 pages of this novel..
It's really fine plot, fun atmosphere of underground and evil religious cult that wants to control and invade the aboveground, curious scientist who discover strange writings on the walls of the very deep underground in Hieroglyphic old Greek letters.
Mother being torn believing her son went murderous (nice idea but I hated her reaction) and a Friend getting full of the troubles his friend put him through..
All that is fine..the idea, characters and the story ...But what's bad is, being 645 pages in Deep in the Dark Underground is not healthy at all..
I'd rate it 3...but actual rating is 2.5 cause it was too unnecessary long literally made me feel claustrophobic...
Hopefully next book seems better -told you I already bought the first 4 books before even reading the first one.-
