(HISTORY OF THE PHILOSOPHY OF MORALS, LAW AND STATE IN ENGLAND AND FRANCE) This volume, published in 1855, is one of the most illuminating expositions of European political thought from Machiavelli to Destutt de Tracy. It is of particular relevance that the author deals with the close relationship between moral and political ideas. Thus he discusses Montaigne and Charron in his chapter on French politics and ethics in the 16th century, or again the moral and political thought of Bacon, Herbert of Cherbury, Milton and Hobbes in the 17th century. Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hume and Adam Smith are examined, and, in the third part of the volume are treatments of Pascal, Fenelon, La Rochefoucauld and La Bruyere. The Physiocrats are discussed as well as Turgot, Volney and Condorcet. Vorlander's volume is still one of the best general expositions of European political thought. German Text
